Mara was once an ordinary mountain girl in Tor Phagos, meaning that she thought about fighting to the exclusion of all else. In accordance with the custom of her clan, on her tenth birthday she made her first kill – a wolf that had almost ripped her apart before she managed to slide her knife between its ribs. The village’s warriors had all left several days before to accompany the clan’s main forces on a raid, so those left behind to guard the village held a celebration for her along with the merchant and mercenary band that had just come into town that evening. There was much drinking and rejoicing all around, and by the time it was all over and everyone had either gone home or passed out, Mara would have felt completely comfortable calling it the best day of her life.
That night, she awoke to the sounds of screaming and metal crashing against metal. When she heard the door of her house smashed down, the little warrior grabbed her knife and raced to confront the intruder. When she finally saw the goblin, however, she froze up in panic, which gave the creature time to smash her through a wall and knock her out. When she awoke, the village was in ruins and the mercenary band was emerging from the burning inn soaked in black blood. She followed them to the Temple of the White Wyrm, where she stayed under the protection of a fire elemental. While she waited for the party to come back, the full weight of what had happened hit her at once, causing her to cower in a corner crying and muttering to herself “I wasn’t strong enough… I wasn’t strong enough… I wasn’t strong enough…”
